Information I got from the supreme court

The formation of the court

The supreme court ordinance 1868 abolished the court of judicature serving Penang, Singapore and Malacca and replaced it with the supreme court of straits settlements. With the courts ordinance 1873 the court now consisted of the chief justice, the judge of Penang, and a senior and junior puisne judge. The court continued to have two divisions- one at Singapore and Malacca and other at Penang. The ordinance also conferred on the supreme court the jurisdiction to sit as a court of appeal.

Other Interesting facts I found out

-Ceremonial and Everyday Judges Wigs were made of horsehair, each wig came with its own stand and storage box for safekeeping

-A machine called the seal machine was used to affix the official seal to court documents.

-Under the judicial duties act 1867, some key designations were changed such as "recorder of Singapore" became the "chief justice of the straits settlements" and the "recorder of Penang" became the "judge of Penang". Sir Peter Benson Maxwell who was at the time the " recorder of Singapore " became the first " chief justice of the straits settlements " in 1867

With the courts ordinance 1873 the court consisted of the chief justice [ Sir Thomas Sidgreaves], the judge of Penang and a senior and junior puisne judge (ordinary judges). The court continued to have two divisions - one at Singapore and Malacca and the other at Penang. The ordinance also conferred on the supreme court of the jurisdiction to six as a court of appeal.

The Japanese occupation

-Singapore was invaded by the Japanese forces and was surrendered to them on 15 February 1942. The island was renamed "syonan" by the Japanese. All existing courts ceased to function during the Japanese occupation, which lasted three and a half years. On 27 May 1942, the courts were re-opened by a proclamation which stated: "With the restoration of peace and order in Malaya and for the proper protection of the people, the civil, criminal and supreme courts have been reopened to try civil and criminal cases, except military offenders. Without prejudice to the functioning of the Military Administration, the jurisdiction of these civil courts is confined to civil and criminal cases only. "The Syonan supreme court or "Syonan koto-hoin" was opened on 29 May 1942. A court of appeal was also created but it never sat.

Voluntary welfare at APSN

In primary school I had a via event which my friends and I decided to make a game to earn money. We then used it help the APSN organisation and when we did so,we also went to one of the APSN centres to see what they do there. We found out that the disabled people who work there are train to do simple jobs so that they can survive without relying on others and to earn money for the organisation they make cupcakes and other baked foods to be sold to the public.

I can learn to preserve through as making the games was no easy task and it was challenging as we wanted to make it out of fully reusable materials, such as cardboard boxes. To entice our juniors to play the games we decided to decorate it to make it seem more appealing to students. Moreover we gave sweets to those who wear able to finish the games as a bonus for paying money. However the most important thing I learnt from this via is that if people can push through having disabilities and still have strength to smile and do want they want to do it helps me belive that If I put my mind to something it will be achievable no matter what.
